Description
From the historic town of Hindeloopen you can take a beautiful bike ride through Southwest Friesland. The route takes you through charming old villages, a vast polder landscape and to the famous Afsluitdijk.
Picturesque Makkum
Makkum is one of the villages on your route that was once located on the former Zuiderzee. Here you will see some monumental buildings that bear witness to the rich history of this town, such as the merchant houses near the seventeenth-century lock on the Workumerdijk. A little further on you can already see the Afsluitdijk from the cycle path. This flood defense, built between 1927 and 1932, remains an impressive sight.
Historical Hindeloopen
Pingum enjoys a protected village view, including the Victorius Church from 1500. You can also easily experience the old atmosphere in Workum. You will see beautiful buildings such as the former town hall, the weighing house and the St. Gertrude Church. A visit to the Jopie Huisman Museum is very worthwhile. Hindeloopen is one of the Frisian Eleven Cities, it received city rights as early as 1225.
