Cycling route: 546459
Provided by: Groots Genieten
A beautiful route through a typical Twente landscape, such as the Hezinger Es. But you will also discover a cultural-historical gem: the Stift van Weerselo, where noble ladies were trained from the fourteenth century.
Hezinger Es
First you drive along the Hezinger Es to Nutter, a beautiful rolling area where you seem miles away from the Netherlands. Not surprising, because the German border is a stone's throw away! You drive through those typical Twente villages and follow the Almelo-Nordhorn canal for a while. If you drive a bit further, you will be in Germany again in no time.
The Stift
Further on you will discover the beautiful historic buildings of Het Stift van Weerselo, where once unmarried noble ladies were provided with a good education. This has been a Stift since the fourteenth century, but its history goes back even further: it is located on the site of a former Benedictine monastery from the twelfth century. Be sure to visit the Stiftskerk, which was completely rebuilt in 1600 after a fire.
