Description
It is wonderful to walk in Brabant's Peel. This route takes you from Natuurpoort de Peel through the Deurnese Peel and the forests of the Galgenberg.
The Peel
The Peel area was once more than 30,000 hectares in size. Now only 4,500 hectares of raised bog remain. About 1,300 hectares have been declared a National Park 'De Groote Peel'. The Deurnese Peel and the adjacent Mariapeel around the peat colonies of Griendtsveen and Helenaveen are also remnants of this once extensive raised bog area. The area had dried out considerably due to the peat excavations, but attempts are now being made to preserve the raised bog by making nature wetter again.
The Galgenberg
De Peel is more than peat: you will also find beautiful forests here in the region. The Galgenberg - also called Liesselse Bossen - is a vast forest area. It is located on a cover sand ridge between the valley of the Oude Aa and that of the Astense Aa. A canalized section of the Oude Aa runs through the forest, in which weirs have been placed. Due to the Peel Edge Fault (one kilometer away), the drop here is up to two meters.
