Description
The Brabantse Peel is a great place to walk. This route takes you from Natuurpoort de Peel through the Deurnese Peel and the forests of the Galgenberg.
The Peel
The Peel area once covered more than 30,000 hectares. Now, only 4,500 hectares of raised bog remain. About 1,300 hectares have been declared the National Park 'De Groote Peel'. The Deurnese Peel and the adjacent Mariapeel around the peat colonies Griendtsveen and Helenaveen are also remnants of this once so extensive raised bog area. The area had dried out considerably due to the peat excavations, but now an attempt is being made to preserve the raised bog by making nature wetter again.
The Galgenberg
The Peel is more than peat: you will also find beautiful forests in this region. The Galgenberg - also called Liesselse Bossen - is an extensive forest area. It is located on a cover sand ridge between the valley of the Oude Aa and that of the Astense Aa. A canalized section of the Oude Aa runs through the forest, in which weirs have been placed. Due to the Peelrandbreuk (a kilometer further on), the drop here can be up to two meters.
