Walking through Amersfoort and surroundings

This beautiful route takes you through the historic city center of Amersfoort. You also walk through the Bergkwartier, which enjoys a protected cityscape because of its old villas.

Pinetum Birkhoven
You will soon pass the famous Amersfoortse Kei, a boulder, on the corner of the Stadsring. In the Bergkwartier you will see some majestic villas. You will also pass the beautiful monumental water tower from 1912. Further on you walk through Birkhoven, a quiet forest area at the foothills of the Utrechts Heuvelrug. In the middle of the forest you walk through the publicly accessible pinetum that was planted in 1934 as a source of employment. You will see some special coniferous trees here.

Medieval Amersfoort
Besides being cozy, Amersfoort is also rich in history. You can see the medieval history of the city in the many monuments, streets and canals. The fifteenth-century Onze Lieve Vrouwetoren is literally the biggest eye-catcher, measuring almost 100 meters. The sixteenth-century St. George's Church is also worth a visit. The Mondriaan House is a museum in the birthplace of the famous painter.

War memorials
The route also leads you past two war monuments. First you pass a monument to the employees of the NS Wagenwerkplaats who died during the Second World War. The Jewish cemetery contains a monument for the 55 Jewish people who were killed in Camp Amersfoort.
