Through Laag Holland and the Beemster World Heritage Site

Near Purmerend you will find the National Landscape of Laag-Holland. It is the area par excellence where you understand what is meant by the statement 'God created the world, the Dutch made the Netherlands'.

World Heritage Beemster
The landscape was conquered from the water with blood, sweat and tears. You will see reclaimed land, peat meadow areas and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Beemster. And of course water. The polder is veined with ditches, canals and channels to regulate the water level. You can enjoy panoramic views along the banks of the IJsselmeer. In places like Middenbeemster you see centuries-old history reflected in picturesque buildings.

Wormer and Jisperveld
You also cycle close to the Wormer and Jisperveld: one large area of ditches and meadows. Lush strips of reeds adorn the banks and you look out over neatly divided polders on the one hand and rugged peat meadow areas on the other. The Wormer and Jisperveld is the largest contiguous peat meadow area in Western Europe. It is a paradise for meadow birds. The black-tailed godwit in particular is found here in large numbers, with up to four hundred pairs to be found.
