Description

At Purmerend you will find the National Landscape of Low Holland. It is the area par excellence where you understand what is meant by the statement'God created the world, the Dutch made the Netherlands\\\'.

World Heritage Beemster
The landscape has been conquered from the water with blood, sweat and tears. You will see reclaimed land, peat meadow areas and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Beemster. And of course water. The polder is veined with ditches, canals and channels to regulate the water level. You can enjoy panoramic views along the banks of the IJsselmeer. In places like Middenbeemster you can see the ancient history reflected in picturesque buildings.

Wormer and Jisperveld
You also cycle right past the Wormer and Jisperveld: one large area of ditches and meadows. Lush reed strips adorn the banks and you look out over tightly arranged polders on the one hand and capricious peat meadow areas on the other. The Wormer and Jisperveld is the largest contiguous peat meadow area in Western Europe. It is a paradise for meadow birds. Especially the black-tailed godwit is found here in large numbers, there are four hundred pairs to be found.
