The green belt of Lelystad

There is a beautiful green belt around Lelystad. You drive through beautiful new forests, such as the Hollandse Hout. You will also pass the Bataviawerf, a beautiful place to experience Dutch shipping history.

Batavia wharf
The Bataviawerf is definitely worth a visit. Here you can admire a replica of the Batavia, the famous seventeenth-century ship. The Seven Provinces are also being recreated here. At the shipyard you will also learn more about historic wooden shipbuilding. Further on you drive through the Zuigerplasbos, a park-like landscape where flowery lawns, shrubs and many types of trees alternate. You can get a breath of fresh air on the dike on the IJsselmeer. And enjoy the peace and the panoramic view.

Dutch Wood
On the east side of Lelystad you drive through the Overijsselse and Gelderse Hout, two varied forests that have grown quickly thanks to the nutrient-rich subsoil. There are mainly native deciduous trees, although exotic species such as a giant silver fir, a Californian sequoia and Canadian Sitka spruce also grow in the Gelderse Hout. It is also wonderfully relaxing to travel for miles in the Hollandse Hout. By the way, you cycle here four meters below sea level!
