Cycling through the old cultural landscape of South Beveland

Just below Goes you drive through the southern part of Zuid-Beveland, an area also known as the Zak van Zuid-Beveland. Here you will discover a characteristic cultural landscape and beautiful old villages such as Nisse.

Beveland
The southern tip of Zuid-Beveland is very easy to discover if you cycle over the many flowery inner dikes. The small-scale landscape here consists of a mix of small polders, creeks, orchards and border lindens. You will also see some vliedbergen, artificial hills that may have served as the basis for a motte. This beautiful area has been slowly reclaimed from the sea through countless small reclamations. The monks of Sint Bavo from Ghent already started this in the twelfth century, so Beveland is named after them.

Picturesque Nisse
You will also see some sights along the way. In Hoedekenskerke you can see the Koutermolen from 1847. Station Hoedekenskerke is also a picture. There are still many monumental farms around Kwadendamme. A little further on you will pass the Korenhalm, a flour mill from 1876. Nisse is one of the most beautiful villages in South Beveland, especially the fifteenth-century church is a picture. In Oudelande you see a striking church tower because of the clock face. At Brasserie de Landing you can enjoy a drink and snack with a view of the Scheldt.
