Cycling through beautiful Drenthe villages

Drenthe is known for its vast and quiet nature reserves. But you will also find authentic old villages in this province. This route introduces you to the charm of Gees, Aalden and green village Benneveld.

Saxon farms
The esdorpen Gees and Aalden have retained their authentic character. You cycle through the parts of these villages that enjoy a protected village view, because they consist entirely of beautiful old Saxon farms. You can also take a leap back in time at the green of Benneveld. Now that's enjoying the cultural history of Drenthe! Zweeloo and the surrounding area are also worth visiting: at the end of the nineteenth century, the village served as a source of inspiration for artists such as Vincent van Gogh.

The Klecke
There may be no large nature reserves on your route, but there is plenty of natural beauty to admire. In the Drenthe esdorp landscape you cycle through a mosaic of ash trees, stream valleys and bushes. It is still nice and quiet here on the cycle paths, so you can enjoy carefree. Just before Oosterhesselen you pass the wooded Landgoed De Klencke. The current manor house dates from the eighteenth century.
