The Alblasserwaard Mill Route starts here from TOP Alblasserdam.
This cycling route takes you past the many windmills, green meadows, polders and typical dike villages of the Alblasserwaard. Along the way you will become acquainted with the way the Netherlands deals with water, for example at the impressive windmills of Kinderdijk World Heritage.
Alblasserdam was first mentioned in 1299 and was founded in 1447. It owes its name to the construction of a dam in the Alblas river. It once formed one whole, a glory, with the village of Oud-Alblas. The old center of Alblasserdam was badly hit by a bombardment on May 11, 1940. Fortunately, the historic Kerkstraat and the characteristic dike buildings along the North River have largely been preserved.
A few tips
Kinderdijk World Heritage
The 19 windmills of Kinderdijk symbolize the way in which the Netherlands deals with water. They kept the rough and moist peat area dry for a long time, which was plagued by subsidence and flooding: the Alblasserwaard. The Museum Mill and information center the Wisboomgemaal bring Kinderdijk's water management into focus. Addresses: Museum Mill, Nederwaard 5, Kinderdijk. Wisboomgemaal, Overwaard 3, Kinderdijk
Recreation center De Vinkenwaard
Recreation center De Vinkenwaard is located on an island in the Alblas river. Passers-by can moor there with a motorboat or canoe and take a breath of fresh air on the terrace. No own water transport? You can rent canoes, pedal boats, rowing boats and motor boats here. You can also board here for a boat trip along Oud-Alblas or Kinderdijk. Address: Vinkenpolderweg 40a, Alblasserdam.
The Waterbus
The Waterbus is a fast boat connection between the Drechtsteden. For example, Alblasserdam has an excellent connection by water with historic Dordrecht. You get out and walk straight into the city. The Waterbus also takes you quickly to the Biesbosch National Park or Rotterdam. And the nice thing is: you can take your bicycle for free. Boarding point: Quay, Alblasserdam.
