The city of Sittard is located in the middle of the Western Mining Region, an area that used to consist of numerous coal mines. Those mines were closed in the second part of the 20th century and since then the area has developed into a pleasant region with Sittard as a bustling center. Through the city to the city park
Sittard was the third city in Limburg to receive city rights, in 1243 to be precise. This makes Sittard one of the older cities in the Netherlands. That rich history is today reflected in the city by all the monuments and museums you will find there. This route takes you from the edge of the city through the outskirts of Sittard. Along the way you can admire various monumental buildings and half-timbered houses. You also walk a bit through the city park of Sittard. This park was laid out between 1921 and 1933 after a design by landscape architect Dirk Tersteeg. The park is crossed by the Molenbeek and you will also find a large pond.
The historic city center
Part of Sittard has a protected cityscape. In this part of the city in the center you will find beautiful monumental sights such as St. Michael's Church, the old market and the city wall.
