Description
You might not say it now, but the area you walk through on this route used to be the border between East and West Germany. The border with border towers, armed border guards, mines and barbed wire has made way for a particularly green landscape.
The Green Strip
For about 30 years, a border ran right through the Rhön area. This border divided Germany into an eastern and a western part. Families spread over both sides of the border were torn apart as a result, but at the same time nature had free reign in the area around the border. In this way, a beautiful green area could be created along the border: the Green Strip. You will find all kinds of special plants, flowers and animals that are found almost nowhere else. During your tour you walk through the green hills with wide views and through quiet forests.
History comes to life
In addition to natural beauty, you will also find traces of the past on this route. This will take you past the Point Alpha observation post. Part of the route follows the path that border guards used to use as a patrol path. This road is now named after the'Way of Hope\\\'.
