Veendam grew into an important peat colony in the 17th and 18th centuries. Because the city developed along canals, green spaces and trees along the waterfront were a major focus from early on. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, city parks became increasingly important, particularly as resting places for the elite of Veendam's former society. This led to the construction of, among others, Julianapark (1913) and the Hertenkamp (Hertenkamp) (1915-1920).

With population growth in the 20th century, demand for places to walk, play sports, and relax increased. This led to the development of larger parks, such as Borgerswold, an area of over 450 hectares developed in the 1970s as a recreation area. Here, residents could escape the city and enjoy nature and outdoor activities.

Many parks in Veendam serve not only recreational purposes but also historical significance. For example, Lintparkje, located on Vijverlaan, sits along the old STAR railway line, and in Julianapark and Hertenkamp, you'll find historic buildings that recall the past. As a result, nature was seen not only as a place for relaxation but also as a way to preserve and visualize Veendam's history.

The mix of green surroundings, recreation in nature and space for history led to Veendam's nickname: Park City of Groningen.
