The Unstrut-Werra-Radweg is a cycling route that takes you over more than 110 kilometers through the north of Thuringia. This route takes you from Schönfeld to Heldra through beautiful undulating nature reserves. The hills are not that steep in this area, so don't be afraid of too steep climbs.
Hainich National Park
The starting point of this route is in Schönfeld. From here you cycle through green areas to Bad Frankenhausen, Sondershausen, Mühlhausen and finally to the terminus near Heldra. On the way you cycle through the Hainich National Park. This park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its unique history and beautiful nature. This area used to be a military restricted zone and now you will find the largest contiguous mixed deciduous forest area in Europe. In this forest you will find a lot of beech forests. These trees are protected here because they form prehistoric forests. In addition to the beech, ash and lime trees also occur here. There are also fifteen different bat species, seven woodpecker species and the European wild cat.
The Wildcat Village
The wild cat village of Hütscheroda is located in the middle of the park. Pay a visit to this place if you want to see how the cats eat here in an open space. In the'Wildekattenschuur\\\' you can learn more about the flora and fauna in this park.
Walk at a great height
Another attraction in Hainich National Park is the treetop trail. Here you can walk at a height of 44 meters over parts of the primeval forest. This way you can see the forest from above, as the birds that live here are used to the forest. That gives a completely different picture than what you normally see when you walk through the forest.
