The middle Saale valley is perfect for a nice walk with spectacular views. On narrow paths, through deciduous forests and along field edges you make your way through this special area with this route. From the panoramic road you follow, you can look out over the city of Jena, the picturesque valley of the Saale and beautiful castles in the surrounding area.
Breathtaking views
The starting point of this route is on the outskirts of Lobeda, a district of Jena. From here you can quickly walk through a hilly nature reserve in the direction of small towns such as Tautenburg and Dornburg. Along the way you will come across one beautiful viewpoint after another. Look out over small villages between vast meadows, the characteristic tower of Jena from which you can recognize the city from afar, and ancient castles such as the Dornburger castles and the Leuchtenburg. The Leuchtenburg is one of the most beautiful high castles in Germany with a watchtower, moats and much more.
Sparkling Jena
These open sections of the route are interspersed with stretches of walking through lush forests. You will end your walking tour right in the center of Jena. Here you will find plenty of cozy cafes and restaurants where you can enjoy a well-deserved snack and a drink.
A museum for literature lovers
In the center of Jena you will find several sights that you can visit at the end of your tour. How about, for example, the botanical garden of Jena or the Romantikerhaus? A literature museum is located in the Romantikerhaus, the former home of the philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte. The house is easily recognizable by its striking green color.
