This route takes you about 195 kilometers on unpaved paths through the Thüringer Wald. A trip for the real nature lover who is not afraid of a bit of adventure. The Rennsteig is the most famous long-distance route in Germany. This route takes you on a road parallel to this well-known route. Along the way you make about 3500 altimeters and some steep parts are spicy. So prepare well if you want to follow this route.
From Hörschel to Blankenstein
The starting point of the Rennsteig-Radwanderweg is in the village of Hörschel on the river Werra. From here you walk through the Thüringer Wald, the Thüringer Schiefergebirge and the Frankenwald to Neuhaus am Rennweg, Steinbach am Wald and Lehesten to the end point of the route in Blankenstein on the Saale. During this trip you walk from top to top in the nature reserves you pass through. On the tops you can enjoy the most beautiful views, but you have to make a big climb first.
An ancient frontier
In the Middle Ages, the Rennsteig formed the border between Franconia and Thuringia. Today it mainly forms the border between the rivers Werra and Saale. The Rennsteig-Radwanderweg has existed since the year 2000. Follow this route and admire all the natural beauty you encounter along the way.
A trip to Eisenach
Near the starting point of the Rennsteig-Radwanderweg you will find the town of Eisenach. This city is known for the ancient Wartburg, an imposing medieval fortress.
