The Thüringer Städtekette cycle route takes you along seven cities in the German state of Thuringia. On this route of more than 230 kilometers you will get to know Eisenach, Gotha, Erfurt, Weimar, Jena, Gera and Altenburg. All these cities have their own unique character and associated attractions. A true feast for the eyes!
From one city to another
The starting point of this cycle route is in the town of Eisenach. This city is known for the medieval castle Wartburg. This castle, which is almost 1000 years old, is located high above the city and the imposing structure is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the best preserved castles in all of Germany. From here you continue to Gotha and then to Erfurt. In Erfurt you can take a look at the 120 meter long Krämerbrücke, the longest bridge in Europe that is built and inhabited. Then the city of the classics Weimar is on the program and from there you cycle on to Jena and Gera.
End in Altenburg
You will eventually end your tour in Altenburg. Here you can take a look at Schloss Altenburg, a castle that was once the residence of the Duke of Saxe-Altenburg. Today the castle is set up as a museum.
Hilly Thuringia
On this route you can not only enjoy historic city centers, but also beautiful nature reserves that lie between the cities. You mainly cycle on asphalted cycle paths and quiet roads. Part of the route runs through a hilly area. So prepare for an adventurous ride if you want to follow this route and enjoy the beautiful views from higher points along the way.
