Description
The Wieden are ideally suited to explore on foot. With this route you can enjoy the natural beauty for hours. You will also pass through the picturesque Zwartsluis.
Rugged Wieden
The Wieden mainly consists of a few large lakes, such as the Belterwijde. It is wonderful to look out over the water and let the silence take effect on you. At the edges of the footpath you can see reed beds, swamp forest and flowery hay meadows. It will not surprise you that the Wieden has been declared one of the most beautiful nature reserves in the Netherlands. Credit where credit is due: the Wieden was created by excavating peat.
Historic Zwartsluis
In this water-rich region you will see many marinas, such as in Blauwe Hand and Belt-Schutsloot. Zwartsluis is located at the point where the Zwarte Water and the Meppelerdiep meet. The beautiful village was once the transit port for the transport of peat from Drenthe to Holland. You will see some beautiful monumental buildings, such as in the Kerkstraat. At Café - Restaurant Belterwiede you can enjoy a drink and a snack.
