During the war, the barbed wire between occupied Belgium and neutral Netherlands ran straight through the abbey buildings. The brewery may use the predicate"Trappist\\\". There is an inn, a brasserie and a terrace. The Achelse Kluis is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
The route has a long approach, via the forest and agricultural area south of Bergeijk, past the picturesque Malpievennen and the watermill on the Dommel (with terrace) to the Leenderheide and then the Achelse Kluis. Especially the last twelve km. are very worthwhile.
On the way back, the route goes fairly directly via Borkel en Schaft, Westerhoven and Bergeijk back to Hof van Eersel.
