Walking through the humid nature near Weert

Near Weert you will find a number of contiguous wet nature reserves, such as the Banen and the Sarsven. This walking route takes you through these Central Limburg gems.

The Jobs
You first walk into the Braakpeel, a nature reserve in the Rietbeek valley. It is nice to walk here with a view of the meadows. A little later you walk along the Banen, around the banks you will find plenty of special plants such as bank herb, marsh deer grass and creeping marsh plantain. There is a bird hut on the east side of this fen. With a bit of luck you will spot the osprey that sometimes comes to forage here.

The Flatwater
Between De Banen and the Sarsven you walk through a strip of willow thickets, gale and dry forests. In other places you will also see rough vegetation and reed collars in which the marsh harrier breeds. It is wonderfully quiet here. It is not without reason that badgers and even wild boars live in this area. To the right of the Banendijk you walk through the Vlakwater, an extensive grassy depression.
