Walking through the humid nature near Weert

Near Weert you will find a number of connected wet nature areas, such as the Banen and the Sarsven. This walking route takes you through these Central Limburg gems.

The Jobs
First you walk into the Braakpeel, a nature reserve in the valley of the Rietbeek. It is nice to walk here with a view of the meadows. A little later you walk along the Banen, around the banks you will find plenty of special plants such as shoreweed, marsh stag's-wort and creeping marsh plantain. On the east side of this fen there is a bird hut. With a bit of luck you will spot the osprey that sometimes comes here to forage.

The Flatwater
Between De Banen and the Sarsven you walk through a strip of willow thickets, bog myrtle and dry forests. In other places you also see rough vegetation and reed collars where the marsh harrier breeds. It is wonderfully quiet here. It is not without reason that badgers and even wild boars live in this area. To the right of the Banendijk you walk through the Vlakwater, an extensive grassy depression.
