Walking through the IJssel valley

From the Hanseatic city of Doesburg you can walk straight into the IJssel valley. In this water-rich landscape you can enjoy peace, space and beautiful views. At the end of your route you will explore picturesque Doesburg.

Middachterbossen
In the floodplains along the IJssel you walk through a landscape of meadows and fields that are surrounded by hedges, shrubs and ancient pollard trees. You walk into the rolling Middachterbossen that lie on the Veluwe lateral moraine. When you come out of the forest, you have a nice view of the area. You cross the IJssel to walk a few kilometers along the Zwarte Schaar, an old IJssel meander. On the other side of the water is the Fraterwaard, a small river island.

Charming Doesburg
Doesburg is located at the point where the Oude IJssel meets the Gelderse IJssel. It is one of the few Dutch cities that has been preserved so well. The medieval street pattern is still completely intact. In the beautifully restored old town you will see many characteristic monumental buildings and shops. The fortifications are also worth seeing.
