Discover green Weert

Weert was named the greenest city in the world in 2014. Hop on your bicycle saddle and come discover nature in this surprisingly charming town. The start is at Gasterij de Stoof where you gain energy for this cycle route.

Weerterbos
You soon cycle into the Weerterbos, one of the few truly old forests in the area. On the edge of this forest you can visit Huyskamer Daatjeshoeve. Back on your bike, you can enjoy this nature reserve, which consists of a beautiful mix of moist and dry forests, grassland plots and small heathlands.  In the middle of the forest you will pass a monument, a border church stood on this spot from 1650 to 1712. A little further on there is a lookout tower. From the top you have a chance to spot red deer.

Beautiful Weert
In Weert you will pass some beautiful buildings, such as the beautiful monumental station building from 1912. A little further on you will drive along the Biest, one of the most beautiful streets in Weert. Here you will see some stately villas, and in the park on your left there is an old tithe barn. At junction 73 you will see the only preserved clay pipe oven in Western Europe on your right. This national monument dates from 1856.

Nijenborgh and Aldeborch
In the thirteenth century, the noble Lords of Horne built Aldeborch Castle on the current Biest (the name of a small river that once flowed here). In the fifteenth century, the castle was no longer sufficient and a new fortress was built a little further away: Nijenborgh. Aldeborch was given to the Friars Minor who established a monastery there. Nijenborgh was almost completely destroyed in 1702 during the Siege of Weert. The current mansion Op de Biest was built in 1841 on the foundations of one of the corner towers. Nowadays a timber yard is located here.
