With this route you take a walk through one of the most valuable nature reserves in the Flemish Waasland: The Fondatie van Boudelo. A great opportunity for those looking for a really quiet area!
Boudelo Abbey
Near Sint-Niklaas is a unique nature reserve: The Fondatie van Boudelo. Around 1218, this area was assigned to the then-founded Boudelo Abbey. It is said that the Reynaert story was written in this abbey. You walk through a varied cultural landscape of moist grassland, coppice forests, hay meadows, pools, deciduous forests and poplar and pollard willows. In short, a route on which you will not be bored for a single moment and where you will experience a wonderful silence everywhere.
Flora and fauna
The monks have long since ceased to be active in this nature reserve. Their abbey was destroyed in 1578 by Ghent Calvinists. You can spot beautiful birds here. The buzzard, kingfisher, black woodpecker and honey buzzard, among others, have a breeding ground in this nature reserve. If you like birds, you're in the right place here. At the pools you will find many dragonflies. As many as 28 species have been observed. Aquatic plants such as frizzled pondweed, fine water-ranunculus and frog bite also grow there. In short, there is plenty to see in this area.
