A flat route in the Flemish Ardennes? Yes, it is possible: the Zwalm Route leads you through an idyllic landscape with charming villages, wide panoramas, the babbling Zwalmbeek and a beautiful Scheldt arm.
Zwalm Valley
Along the Zwalmbeek you will see a typical stream valley landscape for the Flemish Ardennes. On one side of the water there is a steep slope, on the other side the slope rises much more gradually. The Zwalm Valley is one of the best preserved stream valleys in this region. You will see meadows, forest remnants, small landscape elements, salt marshes and beautiful old mills. You will also find an old-fashioned silence here!
Old Scheldt arm
You will also pass the Kaaihoeve, an eighteenth-century farm located near the Oude Scheldearm. There is a flood area on this watercourse between the Oude Scheldt arm and the Scheldt, a beautiful wet nature reserve. In small Paulatem you will pass the St. Gangulfus Church, which originally dates from the twelfth century. At the end of your route, take a detour through Dikkele, which is on the list of the 50 Most Beautiful Villages in Flanders. Here you will still find the atmosphere of a century ago!
