Cycling route: 541069
Provided by: Plan Bier
In the Belgian Waasland you can enjoy cycling through a natural landscape. Part of the route runs over old railway lines: that means wonderfully quiet cycling on car-free paths!
Foundation of Boudelo
The Boudelo Foundation is a varied cultural landscape. You cycle here through a mix of moist grassland, coppice forests, hay meadows, pools, deciduous forest and poplar and pollard willows. It is one of the few real quiet areas in Flanders, wow! Around 1218, this area was assigned to the then-founded Boudelo Abbey. It is said that the Reynaert story was written in this abbey, which was destroyed by Ghent Calvinists during the Reformation.
Daknam Meersen
Villages with historical sights are also included on your route, such as Kemzeke. The picturesque Sint-Pauwels enjoys a protected village view, you can admire the Sint-Pauluskerk from 1494 here. The Roomanmolen from 1847, the highest stone windmill in Flanders, is also located here. A little further on are the Twist Chapels, the result of a nineteenth-century disagreement between Sint-Pauwels and Kemzeke. At the end of the route you drive on an old railway bed through the Daknamse Meersen, a beautiful nature reserve.
