Right through the polders

This route winds its way through the border area of the Dutch Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and the Belgian Waasland, a region just above Sint-Niklaas. You cycle through largely uninhabited areas.

Prosper Polder
On the left bank of the Scheldt you drive through the Prosperpolder and the Schor Ouden Doel: beautiful mud flats and salt marshes. It is wonderfully quiet here. If you hear anything at all, it is the wind that has free rein in the vast polder. You pass through Doel, the village near the nuclear power plant that is slowly disappearing. You can still see the Scheldemolen from 1614 here. He does not stand up, but in the dike.

Stone Forests
Not the entire landscape consists of polders. You drive through the Steense Bossen and the adjacent Clingse Bossen, two wonderfully quiet nature reserves where mainly deciduous trees grow. The forests grow on a cover sand ridge, a rarity in this region of marine clay polders. The route also takes you through a number of characteristic villages. In Prosper and Prosperdorp, the border not only runs through the village, but even through houses!
