Taste the silence on the Veluwe

The Veluwe is not only rich in natural beauty: you will also find an unprecedented silence for Dutch standards. The route also takes you through Putten and Elspeet.

After a refreshing night's sleep at Recreatiepark Boslust, you drive into the woods of the Veluwe. First you will pass Landgoed Schovenhorst. You can visit some special gardens here. There is also a forest tower more than forty meters high. Then you drive through the Speulderbos, one of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the Netherlands. How quiet it is here! In the middle of the forest you pass through Drie, a hamlet of only a few houses that was already mentioned in 855.

Wells
Further on you pass Uddel and Elspeet, two beautiful villages. After driving through the woods for a while, you can enjoy the beautiful view of the area on the edge of the Ermelose Heide. Here is also the site of the only Roman marching camp that the Netherlands has known. The contours of the camp can still be seen in the landscape. Finally, you drive through Putten, where you will see, among other things, the fifteenth-century Reformed Church.

Estate Staverden
Just before junction 86 you pass Landgoed Staverden. Centuries ago, this estate was laid out as the beginning of a city. That plan fell through, so that Staverden is now officially the smallest town with city rights in the Benelux. Here you can take a look at the beautiful monumental buildings. The manor house originally dates from the thirteenth century. The current version was built in 1905. The legend of Leonora van Barchem is connected to this country house, also known as the White Pauwenburcht: she died here due to heartbreak. Her ghost would still wander around Staveren at night, crying.
