Taste the silence on the Veluwe

The Veluwe is not only rich in natural beauty: you will also find an unprecedented silence by Dutch standards. The route also takes you through Putten and Elspeet.

Three
First you pass Landgoed Schovenhorst. You can visit some special gardens here. There is also a forest tower that is over forty meters high. Then you drive through the Speulderbos, one of the oldest and most beautiful forests in the Netherlands. How quiet it is here! In the middle of the forest you pass through Drie, a hamlet of only a few houses that was already mentioned in 855.

Putten
Further on you will pass through Uddel and Elspeet, two beautiful villages. After driving through the woods for a while, you will enjoy the beautiful view of the surroundings at the edge of the Ermelose Heide. Here you will also find the site of the only Roman marching camp that the Netherlands has ever known. The contours of the camp can still be seen in the landscape. Finally you will pass through Putten, where you will see the fifteenth-century Reformed Church.

Staverden Estate
Just before junction 86 you will pass Landgoed Staverden. Centuries ago this estate was built as the beginning of a city. That plan did not go ahead, so that Staverden is now officially the smallest town with city rights in the Benelux. Here you can take a look at the beautiful monumental buildings. The country house originally dates from the thirteenth century. The current version was built in 1905. The legend of Leonora van Barchem is connected to this country house, also called the Witte Pauwenburcht: she died here from a broken heart. Her ghost is said to wander around Staveren at night, crying.
