Cycling through the Heuvelland

The South Limburg Hills are a unique region in the Netherlands. Explore this area by bike and experience the rich cultural history.

National Landscape
Due to its unique cultural history, the Heuvelland has been given the status of National Landscape. You cycle through a mosaic of forests, fields and meadows. Here and there you can still see the traditional coulisse landscape with high-stem orchards and hawthorn hedges. From the hilltops you naturally have the most beautiful views of the Netherlands. Take your time to catch your breath from the climb and the breathtaking surroundings.

Limburg half-timbered
The Heuvelland is of course also characterised by the many monumental half-timbered houses and square farms. When you cycle into a hamlet like Bruisterbosch, it sometimes feels as if you have taken a leap back in time. In Margraten you cycle past the Sint-Margaritakerk, a characteristic church built in marlstone, the tower of which dates back to the fourteenth century. Opposite the church in Mheer you are welcome on the cosy terrace of Café Quanten.

Tower mill of Gronsveld
On the edge of Maastricht you will come across the Torenmolen van Gronsveld. This is one of the five remaining tower mills in the Netherlands, so it is a unique sight. Especially because the building is among the top 100 monuments. The mill dates from 1623 and was used to grind grain. In 1944 the mill was on the front line: it was shot at and burned down completely. In 1959 the mill interior was rebuilt by the mill builder family Adriaens from Weert.
