Hiking in Hamont-Achel

In the Belgian Kempen you can take beautiful long walks through town and country. This route takes you through Hamont-Achel, through Neerpelt and through the nature-rich countryside.

Warmbeek Valley
From Hamont you can walk straight into the green rural area. The route takes you twice through the valley around the Warmbeek. A beautiful nature reserve with wet hay and meadows, marsh forests and coniferous forests. Along the banks of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal, it is nice and quiet to continue, while looking out over the rippling water. You cross the canal to walk to the old cozy village center of Neerpelt.

Beautiful Achel
You can also spot some nice sights in Achel. At the Michielsplein you will pass the neo-Gothic village church from 1909. You will also see a music kiosk from 1935 and an old-fashioned cast-iron village pump. On the way to Hamont you will pass the Onze Lieve Vrouw in Nood chapel from 1838. You will cross the Military Dyke from 1839 which was specially built to allow Dutch troops to march from Maastricht to Budel. In Hamont it is time to taste some local products!

Teutenhuizen
Hamont-Achel is known for the Teuten trade in the eighteenth century. Teuten were well-organized traders and craftsmen who traveled from the Kempen with their merchandise through Western Europe. The Teuten built a number of stately houses, some of which you can still see at the market in Hamont.
