Discover the charm of Hamont-Achel

Hamont-Achel is a green historic town in Belgian Limburg. You will find several beautiful sights there, such as St. Benedict's Abbey, the Achelse Kluis, the Napoleon Mill and beautiful Teutenhuizen. In the countryside it is wonderfully peaceful to cycle through the woods.

Limburg Kempen
The route starts at Fietscafé De Burg. Before you jump on the saddle, you can have a drink here. You then cycle to Achel, where you pass the VVV Hamont-Achel vzw. You can find great tips for this region here. A little later you drive through the Haarterheide and the Beverbeekse Heide, two nature reserves that are largely planted with Scots pine. What a wonderfully peaceful cycling experience here!

Teutenhuizen
West of Achel you drive for miles through forests and stream valleys. Along the banks of the Bocholt-Herentals Canal, the kilometers pass almost automatically. On one side the water ripples, on the other side is the beautiful Lozerheide forest. Hamont-Achel is known for the Teuten trade in the eighteenth century. The Teuten built a number of stately houses, some of which you can still see at the market in Hamont. Time for a terrace!

The wire
Near junction 216 you come to border post 174. Here is a replica of De Draad, a border barrier built by the Germans during WWI of no less than 332 kilometers along the border between the Netherlands and Belgium. The Wire was under high tension, it had to prevent people, goods and sensitive information from crossing the border. The Wire cost the lives of many hundreds of people.
