The Belgian Beringen has been a mining area for decades. You can experience this cultural history in a beautiful way on the former mining sites. You will also find plenty of natural beauty in the Limburg Kempen.
Spire mine Beringen
The mining slag heap of Beringen is a living reminder of Limburg's coal mining past. What used to be a heap of heaped stones is now a hill where bushes and clearings alternate. A special place. From the 100 meter high terril you have a magnificent view of the surroundings. Then you drive into the valley of the Zwarte Beek: a beautiful nature reserve with a wide variety of plants and trees. Ideal for exploring by bike!
Limburg Kempen
Just before Heusden-Zolder you pass the second slag heap. The former black gold has been forged into a green diamond in recent years. In the summer you can spot cheerfully fluttering queen pages. And here too you have a beautiful view from the top. You then ride on a wonderfully quiet cycle path through the woods and stream valleys of the Limburgse Kempen. What a wonderful silence you still experience here! The route ends at the TOL Beringen site.
