Beringen, Flanders, Belgium
Cycling route: 541027
Provided by: Tourist Info
The Belgian Beringen has been a mining area for decades. On the former mining sites you can experience this cultural history in a beautiful way. You will also find plenty of natural beauty in the Limburg Kempen.
Beringen mine dump
The Beringen mine spoil heap is a living reminder of Limburg's coal mining past. What used to be a waste mountain of piled-up stones is now a hill where groves and open spaces alternate. A special place. From the 100-metre-high spoil heap you have a magnificent view of the surroundings. Then you drive into the Zwarte Beek Valley: a magnificent nature reserve with a large variety of plants and trees. Ideal to explore by bike!
Limburg Kempen
Just before Heusden-Zolder you will pass the second mine spoil tip. The former black gold has been forged into a green diamond in recent years. In the summer you can spot cheerfully fluttering queen pages here. And here too you have a beautiful view from the top. Then you cycle on a wonderfully quiet cycle path through the forests and stream valleys of the Limburg Kempen. What a wonderful silence you still experience here! The route ends on the grounds of TOL Beringen.
