Beringen in Belgium has been a mining area for decades. You can experience this cultural history in a beautiful way on the former mining sites. You will also find plenty of natural beauty in the Limburg Kempen.
Mine slag heap Beringen
The Beringen mine slag heap is a living reminder of Limburg's coal mining past. What used to be a rubbish heap of heaped stones is now a hill where bushes and open spaces alternate. A special place. From the 100 meter high slag heap you have a magnificent view of the surroundings. You then drive into the Vallei van de Zwarte Beek: a beautiful nature reserve with a wide variety of plants and trees. Ideal for exploring by bike!
Limburg Kempen
Just before Heusden-Zolder you pass the second mine slag heap. The former black gold has been forged into a green diamond in recent years. In the summer you can spot cheerfully fluttering queen pages here. And here too you have a beautiful view from the top. You then ride on a wonderfully quiet cycle path through the woods and stream valleys of the Limburg Kempen. What a wonderful silence you still experience here! The route ends at the TOL Beringen site.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
