Beringen, Belgium, has been a mining area for decades. You can experience this cultural history in a beautiful way at the former mining sites. You will also find plenty of natural beauty in the Limburg Kempen.
Beringen mine slag heap
The Beringen mine slag heap is a living memory of Limburg's coal mining past. What used to be a waste mountain of piled stones is now a hill where bushes and open spaces alternate. A special place. From the 100 meter high slag heap you have a beautiful view of the surroundings. Then you drive into the Valley of the Zwarte Beek: a beautiful nature reserve with a wide variety of plants and trees. Ideal for exploring by bike!
Limburg Kempen
Just before Heusden-Zolder you pass the second mine slag heap. The former black gold has been forged into a green diamond in recent years. In summer you can spot cheerfully fluttering queen eagles here. And here too you have a beautiful view from the top. Then you ride on a wonderfully quiet cycle path through the forests and stream valleys of the Limburg Kempen. What a wonderful silence you experience here! The route ends on the TOL Beringen site.
