Bree, Burgundian and of course enjoyment

You can relax and gain new energy with this relaxing bike ride. The route takes you from Bree through the varied landscapes of Kempen~Broek. You cycle past fields, meadows and authentic
places. Take a seat on one of the many cozy terraces to enjoy a cup of coffee with a piece of Limburg pie, a regional beer from the local Cornelissen brewery or go for a tasty dinner in Bree.

Opitter Castle Park
Around Bree you drive through a mosaic of stream valleys, forests, meadows and fields. You see some old farms and characteristic road crossings. It is wonderfully quiet to cycle in this rural area. In the village of Opitter you drive through the castle park, laid out in English landscape style. The castle, which was built in 1900, has been demolished, but you can still see a nineteenth-century flour mill that currently serves as a home.

Pearl of the Kempen
After driving a short distance through the Netherlands, you will arrive at the Abeek along the Voorste Luysmolen, built in 1884. Picturesque Bree is also called the Pearl of the Kempen. In the cozy center you will see several centuries-old buildings. The old town hall on the Markt, for example, dates from the sixteenth century. The facade was rebuilt in 1755 in Louis XIV style. There are also plenty of cozy taverns to have a drink and something to eat.

Tower in Ottonian Style
In the neighboring village of Beek you will pass the centuries-old St. Martin's Church. The tower and some wall parts of this beautiful church date from the beginning of the eleventh century. They are considered rare remnants of the Ottonian style, which was in vogue even before the Romanesque style. The tower is constructed from field boulders and natural stone. It is suspected that it was initially also used as a defense tower. Just above the ground floor, three primitive mask heads have been placed in the tower, which may date from Roman times.
