Walking at the Blankwater Estate

There's nothing nicer than putting on your walking shoes for a short walk through the quiet border area with Germany. This route takes you through the area surrounding the Blankwater Estate, just below the Limburg village of Boukoul.

Boeshei
On your left, at the right-angled bend in the road, you pass a monumental half-timbered barn from the eighteenth century. A little further on you walk into the Boeshei. It is nice to walk among the fragrant conifers. No matter how small this forest is, civilization suddenly seems very far away. It can be that quiet in the Netherlands. Especially in an unknown area like this.

German border
From the forest you walk between some shallow ponds. It is a great habitat for the rare natterjack toad and pinfoot salamander. On beautiful summer evenings you can see the tree falcon hunting dragonflies above the water surface. You literally walk across the border with Germany for a while. On your left, an impressive steep edge by Dutch standards rises to the high terrace of the Elmpter Wald.
