Walking at Blankwater Estate

Nothing better than putting on your hiking boots for a short walk through the quiet border area with Germany. This route takes you through the surroundings of Landgoed Blankwater, just below the Limburg village of Boukoul.

Boeshei
On your left, at the right-angle bend in the road, you pass a monumental half-timbered barn from the eighteenth century. A little further on you walk into the Boeshei. It is nice to walk between the fragrant conifers. No matter how small this forest is, the inhabited world suddenly seems very far away. That's how quiet it can be in the Netherlands. Especially in an unfamiliar area like this.

German border
From the forest you walk between some shallow puddles. It is a great habitat for the rare natterjack toad and fin-leg salamander. On beautiful summer evenings you can see the tree falcon hunting dragonflies above the water surface. You literally walk over the border with Germany. On your left, an impressive steep ridge rises by Dutch standards to the high terrace of the Elmpter Wald.
