At the foot of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug lies a beautiful lowland: the Kromme Rijnstreek. This route takes you through this particularly historic area.
Beverweerd Castle
From the dikes you have beautiful views over watercourses, grasslands and orchards. You pass through villages such as Werkhoven and Schalkwijk where you see many monumental buildings. The area around Langbroek used to consist mainly of swamp forest. Due to the reclamation via waterways and ditches, a characteristic landscape was created here. The residential towers here initially functioned as defense, but later as a status symbol. You will also pass Beverweerd Castle, the current building dates from 1850.
