Roelofarendsveen is part of the municipality of Kaag en Braassem. This municipality has an important water sports function thanks to the Kagerplassen and the Braassemermeer. Furthermore, Roelofarendsveen, which has traditionally been intertwined with horticulture, is a village very worth seeing.

Characteristic of the rural area is the alternation between the peat meadow area and the water. Thanks to the characteristic allotment pattern, the striking windmills and the virtual absence of buildings, the landscape is beautiful. The various ferries give the area a special recreational appeal.

Mills in Kaag and Braassem
Kaag en Braassem has 20 windmills, making it the most windmill-rich municipality in the Netherlands. The Molens en Plassen cycle route (route map available at the Kaag en Braassem tourist agency) goes along the green-blue shore of the Braassemermeer and through the rustic peat polders surrounding the lake. The mills can be admired from the water by following the Alkemade sloop route (also available at the Kaag en Braassem tourist agency).
Historic Roelofarendsveen lock
Northwest of the Braassemermeer there is a lock that provides access to the wet polder of Roelofarendsveen and vice versa. The lock dates from the year 1632. In the past, barges of vegetables and peat were brought to the cities from the polder. Given the different water levels between the polder and the Braassemermeer, it was necessary to construct a lock.

Braassemermeer
The Braassemermeer was created in the time of the peat cutters, between the sixteenth century and 1850. The 425-hectare lake has grown due to peat extraction and weather influences. The green-blue lake is mainly known for its water sports activities. Along the lake you will find marinas, boat rental companies, cafes and restaurants.
