Cycling through Drenthe's natural beauty

In Drenthe you will find beautiful nature reserves. This route takes you through the forests above Norg, the Noordsche Veld and the unique Fochteloërveen.

Drenthe silence
Veenhuizen is a reclamation and prison village that was only accessible to prison staff until 1981. It enjoys a protected village view, including the Koepelkerk from 1826. Just above Norg you cycle through two contiguous forest areas: the Molenduinen and the Langeloërduinen. It's striking how quiet it can be here, wonderful!

Northern Field
Het Noordsche Veld is a nature reserve just above Zeijen. Here you drive through a mix of forest, heathland and stream valley grasslands. You will find archaeological remains there, such as a large complex of prehistoric comb fields (also called Celtic fields). You will also find burial mounds called the Nine Mountains, although there are more. Before the Second World War there were even more burial mounds here. Because the German occupier had constructed a mock airfield here with wooden planes, many of these burial mounds were bombed to pieces.

Beautiful Fochteloërveen
The Fochteloërveen is considered one of the few and best preserved raised bog areas in the Netherlands. The fact that this area has retained its ancient character is mainly due to chance and its isolated location on a provincial border. You will experience a wonderful silence here. From the 18 meter high observation tower near junction 66 you have a beautiful view of the surroundings. Don't forget your binoculars!
