Get a breath of fresh air at Maasluis

From Maassluis you can take a beautiful bike ride along the Nieuwe Waterweg. A route where you can get a breath of fresh air and pass numerous sights and museums.

Striking lighthouse
The Nieuwe Waterweg is a man-made connection between the port of Rotterdam and the North Sea: it was created in 1872. From the dike you have beautiful views of the water, the harbor and the Westland. You will see, among other things, the Maeslantkering, which was put into use in 1997, one of the last parts of the Delta Works. A little further away is the striking red cast-iron High Lighthouse of Hoek van Holland. It houses a museum.

Picturesque Maassluis
While cycling you will also pass through the Staelduinse Bos. This special nature reserve is located on a remnant of former estuary dunes and was established as an estate in the nineteenth century. A little later you pass through Maasland, a picturesque centuries-old mining village. You can also admire many old buildings in the beautiful historic city center of Maassluis. Fort aan den Hoek van Holland
On Koningin Emmalaan in Hoek van Holland you will pass the Fort aan den Hoek van Holland. The fort, built in 1881, served to protect the Nieuwe Waterweg against an enemy fleet. The fort also had to prevent an invasion on the nearby beach. The former fort now houses the Dutch Coastal Defense Museum, a nice excursion. During route 538651 you can also make a pit stop at Monsieur Paul.
