The eleventh stage of the Pieterpad runs right through the Sallandse Heuvelrug National Park. Enjoy the vast heathlands, drifting sand areas and deciduous forests in this national park and completely unwind in the middle of nature as you make your way to Holten.
Natural beauty on the Sallandse Heuvelrug
This walk takes you from Hellendoorn to Holten. The starting point of the route is at a parking lot in Hellendoorn. Park your car here and get ready for a beautiful walk full of natural beauty. Just outside Hellendoorn you will find the Hellendoornse Berg, a 40 meter high hill on the Sallandse Heuvelrug. Then you walk over the Sallandse Heuvelrug, one of the largest nature reserves in the whole of Overijssel. The nature here is varied and especially in August and September it is beautiful on the heathlands. The heather blooms in those months. This national park also forms the habitat of, among other things, one of the last populations of black grouse in the Netherlands. You will also find nightjars, sand lizards and slow worms here.
At the foot of the Holterberg
At the end of the route you will arrive in the village of Holten at the foot of the Holterberg. Just outside Holten you will find the remains of the medieval castle De Waerdenborch. Definitely take a look here if you are interested in history.
The Pieterpad
The entire Pieterpad consists of 26 stages that take you from the Groningen Wadden Sea to the Sint-Pietersberg in South Limburg. This route is just one of these stages. You can choose to follow this route alone, but you can of course also extend your trip with other stages. It all depends on whether you feel like a long trip or not. Choose which area you want to discover.
