A tour through the Fochteloërveen near Assen

Near Assen it is carefree cycling along the Frisian-Drentse border area. This route takes you through the mining and prison village of Veenhuizen and the Fochteloërveen.

Asserbos
Shortly after boarding you will come across a surprise. In the middle of Assen you cycle through one of the oldest forests in the Netherlands! In the Asserbos there is still a piece of the forests that once covered Drenthe. The rest was transformed into a forest of stars in the eighteenth century. What a beautiful place! Veenhuizen enjoys a protected village view: you can see, among other things, the Koepelkerk from 1826.

Fochteloerveen
The Fochteloërveen is considered one of the few and best preserved raised moor areas in the Netherlands. The fact that this area has preserved its old character is mainly due to chance and its isolated location on a provincial border. You will experience a wonderful silence here. From the 18 meter high watchtower you have a beautiful view of the surroundings, don't forget your binoculars. At the cozy Grand-café Restaurant Liff you can enjoy a coffee or a delicious meal.
