The sixth part of the Pieterpad runs straight through the Drenthe landscape from Schoonloo to Sleen. Along the way you can relax in vast forests and enjoy the sound of birdsong. Enjoy nature, what more could you want?
Walking through the woods
The village of Schoonloo is surrounded by the Schoonloo forestry. This forest area is part of the Ellertsveld and was partly constructed by unemployed people during and just after the Second World War in the context of job creation. Previously, the forest was mainly used for timber production, but now it mainly serves as a beautiful area for cyclists and walkers. In this forestry you will find, among other things, the Schoonloërveld. This area was once a barren plain with heath and ash grounds, but at the beginning of the last century it was transformed into a beautiful forest area. In this area you can come face to face with deer or Galloway cattle if you take it easy.
On to Sleen
Eventually you arrive in Sleen. This village borders the Sleenerzand nature reserve. You will also find a beautiful centuries-old dolmen here called'Paperless Church\\\'. The dolmen is located in the middle of a forest area.
Pieterpad
There are various long-distance walks in the Netherlands, but the Pieterpad is the best known of them all. This route is only one of the 26 stages of the route that runs from Pieterburen in Groningen to the Sint-Pietersberg in Maastricht. Choose one of the beautiful stages to walk or explore the entire route. The choice is yours!
