Cycling across the Brechtse Heide

The Brechtse Heide was once a vast heathland. Now you can cycle there wonderfully peacefully. In the area are cozy old villages where you will find some historical sights.

Castle of 's-Gravenwezel
You will soon pass the Kasteel's-Gravenwezel. This castle originally dates from the thirteenth century. Later, the building was thoroughly renovated into the beautiful building that you can now cast a dreamy glance at. The castle is privately owned. Further on, you will pass the Oude Redoute van Oudaan, part of the fortification belt around Antwerp. The watercourse that you cross a little later is a former anti-tank ditch.

On the Brechtse Heide you cycle through meadows and fields that are bordered by large forest complexes. From a distance you can see the church tower of the Abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth. The abbey dates from 1950. Just before you get off you pass the Fort of 's-Gravenwezel dating from 1912, which is part of the Defence Line of Antwerp. On the other side of the road you can have a drink and a bite to eat at the cozy Café Den Inslag.
