The Brechtse Heide was once a vast heathland. Now you can cycle there in peace and quiet. There are pleasant old villages in the area where you will find some historical sights.
's-Gravenwezel Castle
You will soon pass the's-Gravenwezel Castle. This castle originally dates from the thirteenth century. The building was later thoroughly renovated into the beautiful building that you can now take a dreamy look at. The castle is privately owned. Further on you will pass the Old Redoubt of Oudaan, part of the fortress belt around Antwerp. The watercourse that you cross a little later is a former anti-tank ditch.
Defense Line of Antwerp
On the Brechtse Heide you cycle through meadows and fields that are bordered by large forest complexes. From afar you see the church tower of the Abbey of Our Lady of Nazareth appear. The abbey dates from 1950. Just before disembarking you will pass the Fort of 's-Gravenwezel, dating from 1912, which is part of the Defense Line of Antwerp. Across the road you can enjoy a drink and a meal at the cozy Café Den Inslag.
