In the countryside surrounding Culemborg, you can enjoy cycling through the polder. You'll discover orchards, picturesque villages steeped in history, and two forts from the New Dutch Waterline.
Wheel of Bassa
You'll cycle past the Wiel van Bassa, the largest breakwater in the Netherlands. The pool covers approximately thirteen hectares and was formed in 1573 during a flooding of the Diefdijk. Around the wheel, you'll cycle through a beautiful landscape of orchards, meadows, and old farmsteads. Truly picturesque! In Hei- en Boeicop, it feels like you're riding into the past. The church originally dates from the thirteenth century.
Goilberdingerwaard
Just before Culemborg, you'll drive through the Goilberdingerwaard, a bird-rich floodplain area consisting of flower-rich grassland, reed beds, pollard willows, and hawthorn bushes. From the dike, you'll have beautiful views over the Lek River and can see Fort Everdingen and Fort Werk aan het Spoel. It's a lovely spot to stop for a picnic and a photo.
Along two forts
The route takes you past two forts from the New Dutch Waterline. First, you'll see Fort Everdingen. This fortification dates from 1847 and served to hermetically seal off the elevated passage of the Lek dikes and the floodplains. This fort was used by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of the Ministry of Defence until 2014. A little further on, you'll pass Werk aan het Spoel. In 1815, a fortified sluice was built here in the Lek dike to flood the area behind it in the event of an attack.
