A tour around the peat lakes near Naarden

From the fortified town of Naarden it is wonderful to cycle through a region that is full of history. This route takes you through old villages and along the Ankeveense Plassen and the Vecht.

Spanderswoud
You cycle through an open and water-rich landscape for most of the route. At Hilversum you drive through the Spanderswoud. On this former estate you will find a mishmash of trees, it is wonderful to cycle through the rustling green. A little later you cycle along the Kortenhoefse Plassen and the Wijde Blik. Grab a bench here to enjoy the view, the tranquility and a picnic at your leisure.

The Fight
On the meandering Vecht you drive through one of the most beautiful regions of the Netherlands. You will see monumental country houses, characteristic old villages and beautiful open polder landscapes. The kilometers seem to pass by themselves here. You pass two more polder mills: the Stichts-Ankeveense from 1636 and the Meermolen/Onrust from 1809.

Fortified city of Naarden
If you're in Naarden anyway, you might as well explore the town. Naarden is one of the best preserved fortified towns in Europe. The fortress has six bastions, a double wall and a double canal belt. In the cozy town itself you can easily sniff up the historic atmosphere. You will find, among other things, the Sint-Vituskerk: the fifteenth-century tower is the oldest part of this building. The striking Town Hall dates from 1601 and is a fine example of the Dutch Renaissance style. The Libra Museum is housed in a medieval building.
