Enjoy the South Limburg Maas Valley

There is plenty to discover in the South Limburg Maas Valley: Geulle Castle, charming church villages and wonderful tranquility. This route takes you through the beautiful surroundings of Stein and Elsloo.

Elsloo Castle
You start with a tour through the hills. You will pass through Waterval, a picturesque hamlet where time seems to have stood still. In this region you will see some of the characteristic half-timbered farms for which South Limburg is known. You will also pass some roadside chapels, such as in Catsop where the monumental Lady Chapel from 1848 is located. A little further on you will see Elsloo Castle, the eye-catcher of the protected villagescape in Elsloo.

Along the Maas
You drive downstream along the Juliana Canal to Urmond. The original village center is wedged between the Maas and the Juliana Canal and offers you a beautiful glimpse of the history of this town. In Meers you cycle for a while along a meander of the Maas, which forms the border between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Geulle Castle
Geulle Castle is one of the many photo opportunities on your route. The castle originally dates from the seventeenth century, but was largely demolished in 1847. Only the outer bailey still stands. And it is quite impressive in itself. The building is a completely moated, white-plastered house. Partly thanks to the English garden, you can still taste the historic atmosphere here. Just before the castle in Geulle aan de Maas you will pass the St. Martin's Church, a beautiful building whose west tower dates from the fourteenth century.
