Description

Schagen is a cozy village in the northern tip of North Holland. You can get a breath of fresh air here, while cycling through the wide polders and historic villages.

Zuiderzee villages
It is hard to imagine now, but the villages of Oude Sluis and Wieringerwaard were once on the Zuiderzee. Oude Sluis was a berth for VOC ships that sailed out to sea via the Marsdiep. Due to the construction of the Anna Paulownapolder in 1846, the village was definitively cut off from the sea. In Wieringerwaard you will pass the Polderhuis. This house was built here in 1612 as the first in the village!

Picturesque Schagen
In addition to wide views and high Dutch skies, you can also enjoy the colorful splendor of many flowers. After all, the largest contiguous bulb area in the world is located around Anna Paulowna. In the heart of Schagen you can admire some beautiful seventeenth-century buildings. The neo-Gothic Christoforus Church dates from 1883. The bell tower contains one of the oldest bells in the Netherlands: a bell by Herman from 1478.
