Description
In the vicinity of Hooge Mierde and Lage Mierde you will find beautiful forest areas that are perfect for a walk. This route takes you through the forests of the Turnhoutse Heide near the Belgian border.
The Turnhoutse Heide and Wellenseind estate
The starting point of this route is just above the town of Truilt. From here you cycle through the Turnhoutse Heide in the direction of Kattenbosch. This area is no less than 257 hectares and consists of pine forests with here and there a small agricultural area or remnants of heathland. A little before you enter Kattenbosch, you change course to Lage Mierde. This village is located on the Wellenseind estate. This estate consists of wet areas near two meandering streams and drier agricultural areas. From Lage Mierde you continue walking to Hooge Mierde. This village is surrounded by agricultural areas and small-scale coniferous forests. From here you walk back to the starting point on the Turnhoutse Heide.

In Hooge Mierde you can take a look at the Museum De Bewogen Jaren. Here you will find a large collection of utensils from the Second World War and from the war in the Dutch East Indies. Learn about the war history and how citizens lived during this period. Thematic exhibitions pay extra attention to certain periods. Special photo treasure hunts have been set out for children.
