This route takes you past no fewer than four forts of the New Dutch Waterline. On the outskirts of Utrecht there are numerous forts arranged in a semicircle to protect the city. The first fort you encounter Fort near Rijnauwen: the largest fortification of the New Dutch Waterline. A little further on is Fort Vechten, built between 1867 and 1870. Then you cycle into the city via the Amelisweerd Estate. On the other side of the center you will discover Fort Blauwkapel, built from 1818 to 1821. This fort was built around the village of the same name. Fort Voordorp was built between 1869 and 1870 and used to defend the locks and the Utrecht-Amersfoort railway line.
