Description

This route takes you along no less than four forts of the New Dutch Waterline. On the outskirts of Utrecht are numerous fortresses in a semicircle, to protect the city. The first fort you encounter Fort bij Rijnauwen: immediately the largest fortification of the New Dutch Waterline. A little further on is Fort Vechten, built between 1867 and 1870. You then cycle into the city via Landgoed Amelisweerd. On the other side of the center you will discover Fort Blauwkapel, built from 1818 to 1821. This fort was built around the village of the same name. Fort Voordorp was built between 1869 and 1870 and used to defend the locks and the Utrecht-Amersfoort railway line.
