Admire fortresses around Zaandam

Forts in the polders
You get on your bike in Zaandam and from here you cycle through the polders towards Beverwijk. A little before you cycle into Beverwijk you change course towards Krommenie and Wormerveer. On the way you will cycle past Fort aan den Ham and Fort bij Krommeniedijk. Both fortresses are part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. Fort aan den Ham was completed in 1903 and the earthen walls of the fort date from 1896. Fort bij Krommeniedijk was built at the end of the 19th century and it was in use from 1897 to 1956. These forts are well preserved. You imagine yourself in times long gone when you look around here.

Strolling Around in Zaandam
After your bike ride, you can of course also explore the center of Zaandam on foot. This city is located on two parallel dikes on both sides of the Zaan. From here, the city has been further expanded over the centuries. You can, among other things, take a look at the Zaanse Schans neighborhood. This neighborhood is known for the typical Zaan wooden houses. In some houses you will find small-scale museums.
