Polders that stretch as far as the eye can see, ditches, canals and lakes, you will find it all in the head of North Holland. This route takes you from Anna Paulowna through the polders to the IJsselmeer coast where you can get a breath of fresh air. Time to hit the road!
From the Amstelmeer to the IJsselmeer
The oostpolder of Anna Paulowna is the starting point of this route. From here you cycle through the polders to the Amstelmeer. This lake is especially popular with windsurfers. Originally this was the transition between the Zuiderzee and the Wadden Sea, but nowadays the lake is closed off from the sea by the Amsteldiepdijk on one side and closed off from the IJsselmeer by the Wieringermeerpolder on the other side. You then cycle further to the IJsselmeer coast via Slootdorp, Wieringerwerf and Kreileroord. Enjoy the view over the seemingly endless IJsselmeer and then set sail for the polders again. The route takes you through Middenmeer and Wieringerwaard back to Anna Paulowna.
The history of Anna Paulowna
For centuries, there was only sea at the site of Anna Paulowna's polder. This land was only reclaimed around 1870 and it is the last polder in the Netherlands constructed with private money. The polder is named after Queen Anna Paulowna, wife of William II. At the beginning of the 19th century it was discovered that the soil of this polder was very suitable for flower bulb cultivation. Today, the municipality of Anna Paulowna is the largest contiguous bulb area in the world.
