After a cup of coffee at the Wapen van Elst, put on your walking shoes. You walk through the Amerongse Bos, among other things. Most of the forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug are a hundred years old, but some trees from the Amerongse Bos have been there since the 18th century. This used to be the hunting grounds of the lords of Amerongen Castle. The Amerongse Bos is also a lot higher, because it is located on the Amerongse Berg. You will also discover Plantation Willem III, one of the old tobacco plantations on the warm southern slope of the ridge. This plantation was founded in 1853, but tobacco cultivation became less profitable in the early 1900s. In the semi-open landscape there are still a few characteristic barns where the tobacco leaves were dried.

The Amerongse Bos is one of the oldest forests on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. That in itself is not so special because most of the forests on the Heuvelrug are only about a hundred years old. The Amerongse Bos, however, stands head and shoulders above this: some Scots pines date from 1770. The forest owes its age to the lords of the castle Amerongen, located in the Amerongse Bovenpolder. They had the forest constructed for hunting. Besides its age, the Amerongse Bos has another special feature. The forest is located on the 69 meter high Amerongse Berg, the highest point of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

Voormalige tabaksplantage | Plantage Willem III

Remmerdense Heide

East of Elst is a former tobacco plantation: Plantage Willem III. From the 17th century onwards, tobacco cultivation was an important source of income for the inhabitants of Amerongen. Tobacco cultivation was possible here thanks to a favorable southern location in combination with a sandy soil. At the beginning of the 20th century, competition from tobacco grown in warmer regions increased strongly, at the expense of Amerong tobacco cultivation. A brief revival followed in the war years, but then the culture finally came to an end. Only the tobacco museum and the drying sheds, now owned by Het Utrechts Landschap, still remind us of the earlier tobacco industry. The Amerongse Bergschuur information center is located in one of the barns.
